Sharing Knowledge

Agriculture and forestry are the foundations of economic activity within Buckingham County, with livestock being the leading product. The Buckingham Extension Office supports cattle producers in sustaining and improving agricultural profitability. Area producers report a cumulative gain of more than $3 million in benefits annually from their involvement with Extension.

In 2023, Extension orchestrated additional marketing for the feeder calf sale to reach over $3 million for the first time. It brought in an all-time high of $563,000 in premiums. A new initiative — in partnership with the Buckingham Cattlemen’s Association, the Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission, and Seven Hills Food Company — promoted locally raised and finished beef. With a producer-reported loss reduction of $132,000 and increased access to processing, Extension helped beef producers in Buckingham and beyond increase their profitability.

Community Voices

“4-H has enabled my kids to learn so many skills. They experience new things and immerse themselves in learning opportunities that help them as they grow. Most importantly, they learn positive citizenship. They enjoy 4-H because they have fun while learning new things. ”

“In 2023, I taught 92 youth about healthy eating habits, how to read and follow a recipe, and common nutrients and what they do for our bodies. Most youth reported increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables they consume each day and drinking more water.”
