Following a decline in school nutrition education, the USDA deputy undersecretary of food, nutrition, and consumer services, Stacy Dean, indicated the need for programs on nutrition and food preparation to be reimplemented.
Ensuring that this learning is hands-on and that every student is given the opportunity to prepare a recipe on their own requires a lot of preparation. It is not feasible for classroom teachers to do this on their own. The Appomattox Extension Office has regularly offered youth cooking instruction.
Appomattox Extension partnered with Appomattox Middle School to offer cooking lessons tied to books students were reading. One hundred thirty-four youth indicated they were more comfortable preparing a recipe at home as a result of this program.

“I promoted the Southern Virginia Precision Agriculture and Farm Efficiency Grant funded by the Virginia Tobacco Commission. This provided $25,000 to five Appomattox farmers with an interest in hay barns, cattle handling equipment, and precision agriculture technology. A waiting list of five producers was established to provide justification for additional funding.”
