Sharing Knowledge
Extension works with local cattlemen and Amelia Area Cattlemen LLC to educate members on the updated vaccination protocols and practices required to market feeder calves through the Virginia Cattlemen’s Association Virginia Quality Assured Tel-O-Auction Program. Verification of vaccinations, paperwork, and other elements of the VQA marketing program is crucial.
Approximately 330 head of feeder steers (six tractor trailer loads) were fed together in Brunswick County and marketed through the VQA program. The feeder calves were processed and fed together for a minimum of 60 days. This achieved a “one herd” group of feeder calves that gain weight and will provide feeder finishers with animals that will perform in their feedlots. This effort improved the income of local producers.
